The Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) were pleased to launch a new event for 2024: FedConnect. This event was designed to enhance communication between PFEW and its members, focusing on discussing the reform program and engaging members on key issues affecting policing, hosted by Ian Collins, a British radio and television presenter, journalist, and author.

This was an invaluable opportunity for members of the policing community to come together, share insights, and shape the future of policing.

NX121 - Lessons Learned

How did the Federation respond after a firearms officer made a split-second decision to protect members of the public?

With the trial now concluded, Matt Cane, Metropolitan Police Federation General Secretary, and Colin Reynolds, Partner at Reynolds Dawson Solicitors, discussed the moment they stepped in to provide all possible support to NX121 from the first day until the conclusion of the trial. They looked back on the lessons PFEW learned while tirelessly working with solicitors for two years on one of the most publicised cases in the UK’s policing history.

Operation Navette - Lessons Learned

Op Navette was the largest mobilisation of public order officers since the 2011 England riots, in response to the violent disorder in the UK during the summer.

Acting Deputy National Chair Brian Booth and Sgt Stuart Green explored the challenges faced by officers providing mutual aid, what more must be done to better support them, and the impact of the media’s reporting on the public protests.

Policing and the Media

The police need the media, and the media need the police. But the relationship between the two has never been a stable one and the cracks have widened in recent years.

What’s gone wrong and how can we achieve a re-set?

The panel session including Danny Shaw, crime, justice and policing commentator and former Advisor to Yvette Cooper, Rebecca Camber, Chair of the Crime Reporters’ Association, Alan Woods, Head of Media and Public Affairs at the National Police Chiefs' Council and Asad Moghal a digital communications expert discussed the issues between policing and the media.
