We heard from Gary Shaw MBE, a former detective and seasoned investigations expert who has played a key role in some of the UK's most high-profile criminal cases. With years of experience handling complex investigations, Gary shared his unique insights and expertise on the intricacies of solving major crimes.

Notably, Gary developed a comprehensive Guide for Police Trainers, a resource distributed nationwide, designed to enhance law enforcement officers' skills. A central element of this guide is the focus on effective interviewing techniques, an essential tool in successful investigations.

One of the key contributions Gary has been involved with is the PEACE model of interviewing, a structured and ethical approach that has become the UK’s national standard for police interviews. The PEACE model emphasizes fairness, accuracy, and evidence-based methods, and stands for:

  • Planning and Preparation

  • Engage and Explain

  • Account, Clarification, and Challenge

  • Closure

  • Evaluation

The introduction of the PEACE model was a transformative step in improving police interview practices, particularly in high-stakes cases, and continues to guide the training and work of law enforcement professionals today.

This session was a rare opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge about real-life criminal investigations, the challenges detectives face, and the critical decision-making processes involved. Whether you are interested in law enforcement, criminal justice, or simply intrigued by the inner workings of major investigations, this event promises to be both educational and engaging.
