Our first of the Detective Insights webinars of 2025 to explore the investigation was led by DS Hall into the illegal production of 3D-printed firearms.

With limited prior cases of this nature and recognising the need for expertise, DS Hall collaborated with Warwick University, which conducted CT scans to preserve forensic evidence and assess the structural integrity of the weapons.

Key findings included:

  • The CT scans confirmed the firearms' functionality and the technical sophistication of the suspect, Biddle Portman.

  • The National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) successfully test-fired the weapon, proving its lethality.

  • Digital forensics uncovered hidden CAD files matching the seized firearm, further strengthening the case.

Despite Portman’s claims that the printed parts were for display purposes, the evidence secured led to a conviction, resulting in a six-year, nine-month sentence. The investigation has since been documented in an academic paper and a BBC forensic documentary, serving as a blueprint for future cases involving 3D-printed weapons.

This case underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in tackling emerging threats.
