Mel Thomas QPM

Retired Police Sgt

Mel Thomas QPM was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal following an outstanding policing career spanning over 30 years. Mel was the first Black African Caribbean officer in Leicestershire to become an Authorised Firearms Officer. His pioneering role included leading the country’s first tactical operation where officers entered a building while a suspect remained inside armed - a strategy that has since shaped national policing tactics.

Throughout his career, Mel has demonstrated innovation and leadership, including his pivotal role in the research and development of a nationally recognised alternative to CS spray. He also independently designed and implemented Leicestershire Police’s spit guards, carefully balancing operational needs with diversity and public health considerations, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mel remains a vocal and dedicated advocate for equality, diversity, and stronger community relations. He has been a leader in officer safety and public order policing, and even after his retirement, he returned to service as a Positive Action Officer to support recruitment efforts, continuing to act as a trusted role model and ambassador within the community.

Deeply committed to youth advocacy and violence prevention, Mel works with disadvantaged students, inspiring them to make positive life choices and consider new career opportunities. A lifelong supporter of charitable causes, he has raised over £400,000 for various organisations over three decades, consistently using his influence to elevate their profiles and champion their missions.

He is now a ground hunter on the popular TV Series Hunted and Celebrity Hunted on Channel 4.
