Martin Brunning

Assistant Chief Constable - Cambridge Constabulary

Martin has served with Cambridgeshire Constabulary since 1995 and is currently the Assistant Chief Constable (ACC) for Local Policing. In this role, he oversees Response, Neighbourhoods, Custody, Criminal Justice, and Investigation Standards.

Previously, Martin held the role of Detective Chief Superintendent (DCS) and Head of the collaborated Professional Standards Department for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire (BCH) Constabularies. In this position, he led investigations into officer conduct, complaints, anti-corruption efforts, and vetting on behalf of all three Chief Constables. This two-year post, undertaken during an unprecedented period in British policing, was the most personally challenging of his career, driven by a commitment to demonstrate to the public that corruption has no place in policing.

Over the past decade, Martin has served almost exclusively in senior detective roles, including as DCS Head of Major Crime and Scientific Services (BCH), DCS Head of Crime and Safeguarding (Cambridgeshire), Detective Superintendent and Head of Public Protection (Cambridgeshire), and Detective Superintendent overseeing Criminal Justice Unit (CJU), Custody, and Investigation Standards.

A nationally accredited PIP 3 Senior Investigating Officer (SIO), Martin has had the privilege of leading numerous homicide investigations. One of the most meaningful aspects of his career has been supporting bereaved families through the court process, standing beside them as juries deliver their verdicts—moments that underscore the importance of justice and the profound responsibility carried by investigative teams. His leadership in this area remains a defining source of pride.
