Dr Sophie King-Hill

Associate Professor - University of Birmingham

Dr Sophie King-Hill is an Associate Professor at the Health Services Management Centre, University of Birmingham. Her research centres on the construction and impact of masculinities, with a particular focus on men and boys in relation to sexual behaviour, violence, misogyny, mental health, and social exclusion. She has developed an innovative framework for reframing work with young men and boys, based on extensive cross-sector research exploring the intersections between gender norms, power, and harm.

Her wider work spans sibling sexual behaviour and abuse, relationships and sex education (RSE), youth voice, and sexual health, underpinned by a commitment to co-design and participatory methodologies. Dr King-Hill has led interdisciplinary projects that inform policy and practice, working across academic, governmental, and third-sector contexts. Her expertise extends to evaluation, implementation science, and the transfer of evidence into policy within complex systems.

Prior to academia, she worked in the voluntary sector with diverse and marginalised young people, including teenage parents and young men with behavioural and emotional needs. Her work continues to shape national debates on gender, prevention, and justice, advocating for evidence-informed, trauma-responsive, and culturally nuanced approaches to public policy.
