Brett Grange

Equality lead - Greater Manchester Police Federation

Brett Grange is the Equality Lead for Greater Manchester Police Federation (GMP Federation). He began his policing career in Wythenshawe, South Manchester, undertaking successful roles within a robbery unit and a plain-clothes proactive team. Following the birth of his first child, he moved closer to home to the Bury division.

Throughout his career, Brett repeatedly returned to response policing, the area where he felt most at home, alongside periods working in neighbourhood policing and on a robbery team. After being elected as a local Federation representative, he found the role highly rewarding. Following a serious injury sustained at work, he was able to dedicate more time to Federation duties and was subsequently elected Equality Lead, a role that, as his now-adult child jokingly describes, has become his “obsession”.

When Brett took on the Equality Lead position, he was determined to develop and professionalise the support available to officers who were victims of police misconduct. He quickly recognised that many affected officers were often left to navigate the process alone, while Professional Standards Departments faced significant workload and resourcing pressures. He also observed the isolation many individuals experienced in the workplace during such investigations.

To address these challenges, Brett developed a local terms of reference to formalise support arrangements. At times, without the infrastructure and resources of the National Federation behind him, the task felt like swimming against the tide. However, through extensive outreach and engagement with members, it became clear that this was an area where greater support was both needed and valued. As a result, the work has gained increasing recognition and now rightly benefits from a seat at the table, along with dedicated structural investment and support.
